FACTOIDS: Most websites sell land based coral calcium or rock coral. Rock Coral runs about $5 per kilo and SMP 44 marine grade we sell cost $34 per kilo - and yet many websites go to great lenghts to convince you that rock coral is superior. Beware of websites trying to convince you they are the defenders of truth like Coral Calcium Watchdogs who are doing nothing but trying to seel their own products at inflated prices.
CONFUSED ABOUT CORAL CALCIUM
You are not alone if you're confused about coral calcium. Every website seems to put a little different twist on the subject. We believe if you will take just a few minutes and read this article you will understand how to evaluate coral calcium for yourself.
What is Coral Calcium Okinawa Coral Calcium is collected from the “Ocean Bed” on the adjacent shallow seas or land masses of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. The primary material originates largely from debris that falls from coral reefs. The Japanese government monitors the collection and living reefs are not damaged contrary to some environmentalist concerns nor is the ecological balance disturbed.
This coral sand is composed of significant amounts of “dead coral” but also consist of variable amounts of marine plant life and dead, unicellular, marine life. Many researchers believe it is this combination of coral sand and marine life that provide the accelerated health benefits of marine grades.
Nature's Imprint
The type of coral calcium which has captured the most attention in the United States is the type collected from the ocean bed. Ocean Bed also known as marine grade has “nature’s imprint” because of the balance of 2:1 calcium to magnesium –plus trace minerals. Marine grades are currently subject to extensive research.
Why We Think It Works
One hypothesis is marine grade coral calcium mirrors the cellular structure found in our bones. The evidence is rather conclusive and this might explain why it absorbs so well. Marine grades seem to retain active nutrient values from sea life –thus improved efficacy. (The body's ability to use a nutrient).
The last point is the western diet suffers from a lack of calcium, magnesium, and minerals. Coral calcium offers a bio-available form of valuable minerals –calcium & magnesium being the primary ones needed by our bodies. We need minerals to properly assimilate vitamins and other essential nutrients at the cell level.
Folklore, Fiction, or Facts
The current health benefit of coral calcium is both a combination of documented successes, folklore, and scientific research. The first issue being studied is the reported longevity of the Okinawans. While a large part of this long age process can be attributed to a mineral rich environment other factors must be considered such as diet, stress, and lifestyle. They live a relatively stress free life, do physical labor (exercise), eat fish protein, and fresh vegetables -major factors of healthy living.
Coral calcium is a valuable holistic mineral with emerging promise for wellness but it is not just calcium. The marine grade has an average content of 21-30% elemental calcium content. Trace mineral are measured in parts per million. The amounts found may vary but this should not significantly impact the quality of marine coral. The curve is rather consistent in measured raw materials samples.
The Perfect 2 to 1 Ratio
Marine Grades have a 2 to 1 calcium to magnesium ratio called "Nature's Imprint." Most people prefer this ratio because it seems to help them avoid problems such as constipation and headaches often accompanying calcium intake. This ratio was studied and was considered the perfect ratio in the holistic world long before coral calcium became so popular. This ratio may have many other benefits yet discovered.
Ph Factors
One prevailing view in holistic medicine is elevating pH to a higher alkaline level increases the body’s ability to resist disease. There is research to support this claim and many outstanding experts adhere to this point-of-view. The experience of people who have actually accomplished this also seem to support there is something to this; however, the time it takes to accomplish this is will depend on age, current health, sex, diet, and lifestyle. The pH balance theory is still rather controversial and is not widely acceptable to the medical establishment.
Coral calcium does contain alkaline metals that can help in buffering H+ ions acid. Other factors which contribute to increases in alkaline states are a diet high in fresh vegetables and fish. Diets high in white sugar and flour and red meats –most likely counteract much of this progress. Alcohol and smoking also counteract this result. Many people have reported a change in their alkaline level and the impeding sense of well-being. Most of these people eat a healthy diet, take phytonutrient-based supplements, along with their coral calcium. We subscribe to a belief that longevity is attributable to approx. 25% genetic coding and the remainding 75% is based on diet, stress, exercise, and environment.
Contemporary Research
The latest research on marine grades is very promising. Natural Biology spent six months researching different grades and even taking it ourselves before releasing our first product. Our conclusion was to offer marine grade only after this in-house test –and we must admit we had a bias before we started because we were fairly convinced marine grades were superior because we knew the raw material cost are higher than land grades.
We apologize for not providing more information about land grades and will have to leave that up to you to determine the quality of information provided by companies who sell land grades or as it is called “above sea” grades.
The ionization of coral calcium is rapid. When gastric juice is added to coral calcium the absorption of coral calcium is greater than found in milk, hydroxyapatite and inorganic calcium carbonate. According to Dr. Stephen Holt of Nature’s Benefit notes “Japanese scientist have reported rapid swings of blood calcium are less common with the use of coral calcium and other marine calcium supplements than with “regular” calcium supplements.
Scientific studies performed at the Futaba Nutrition School of the Kagawa Nutrition University in Japan show the benefit of coral calcium improves bone mineral density when given in balance composition (meaning the 2:1 calcium to magnesium ratio)… Several groups of subjects received a combination of exercise with or without calcium supplements from coral calcium and milk. The greatest increase in bone density were noted with the combined milk and coral calcium supplement combined with initial strength training followed by walking.”
Promising Results for Many Health Concerns
Dr. K. Ishitami, M.D. of Higashi Sapporo Hospital and his colleagues administered 2.8 g of balanced coral calcium (2:1 ratio calcium to magnesium) to more than 20 patients for a period of three months. They observed many positive and some conclusive results. Alterations in bone density, blood lipids and blood pressure along with improved symptoms such as headaches, heart palpitations, peripheral edema (limb swelling) showed positive results. Also emotional response to anger, anxiety, and muscle spasm seem to improve although the evidence was not nearly as conclusive. Blood pressure overall was reduced from 140 to 132 mm Hg and total cholesterol fell by and average of 7 percent. There was also a tendency for blood lipids to alter very favorably, with a rise in HDL and a fall in triglycerides.
Positive EEG Results
Dr. S. Sugimoto of Aichi Syukutoku University has also studied the use of marine coral rather extensively. His primary measurements were the measuring how the central nervous system responded –brain and nerves. After administering coral calcium to 12 students he noticed a significant increase in total alpha-1 wave activity on an EEG. Alpha-2 wave activity in the brain was also increased with a noticeable tendency toward relaxation.
Blood Sugar and Diabetes
Some of the most promising research on coral calcium is for diabetes. Dr. K. Ishitami, M.D. studied a small group of diabetes mellitus patients. They were administered 2.8 g of coral calcium collected from the ocean floor where the magnesium content is less than the 2:1 ratio. Over a three month period he showed improvements in blood sugar control in more than half his patients. There are many reasons why coral calcium can improve blood sugar control –particularly in diabetes. Calcium alone promotes insulin reduction but magnesium activates insulin production. The marine grades that contain the lesser magnesium content are difficult to acquire in this country.
Heart Burn Relieved
One of the most common improvements reported with the use of marine grade coral calcium is the reduction in symptoms such as heartburn. Dr. M. Mori, M.D. of the Institute of Clinical and Pharmacokinetic Study, showed promising results because it appears coral calcium neutralizes acid causing heartburn.
Reason Enough
Coral calcium is an exciting new supplement primarily because people who have researched the subject extensively believe it offers a superior form “nature’s imprint” for the perfect 2 to 1 calcium to magnesium ratio. While companies such as Natural Biology are convinced there are more even more reasons than the absorption of “natures imprint," that in and of itself would be enough reason to consider adding marine coral calcium to one’s regimen of healthy living.
General Descriptions of Okinawa Coral Calcium
There are two basic types of Okinawa Coral Calcium. They are :
Marine Harvested (Grades) called Ocean Bed. This is coral calcium collected from the ocean floor off the shore of Okinawa. There are two marine grades: CCP and SMP.
Land Mined (Grades) are called fossilized, shore grades, and "above sea coral calcium." This is coral calcium mined on land in Okinawa. There are two grades of "land mined" coral calcium: shore grade and rock coral.
Chart of Elements for Marine Grade
MARINE GRADES Marine Grades are classified into two categories. They are :
CCP -is the majority of marine grade. It is referred to as “CCP” or “Coral Calcium Powder.” These natural grains come in a ratio of approximately 35:4 calcium to magnesium. It has a lower magnesium profile than SMP.
SMP -the higher grade has nature's perfect 2 to 1 calcium to magnesium ratio and has the best efficacy. In the Okinawa basin there are pockets of much older coral grains estimated to be about 4% of all coral collected. Technically, this is referred to as Sango Mineral Power (SMP) and it is the clear winner.
LAND also known as FOSSILIZED GRADES. There are two grades of Rock Coral mined on Land.
Land Mined -comes from the Land Company of Okinawa, an offshoot of a limestone mining company. They created the “Land Coral” division as a method of using rubble left over from mining. The petrified coral rock is crushed and is sold as "above sea."
Shore Grade -is coral which has washed ashore. It has been baked by the sun and weathered by the elements, exposed to pollutants and acid rain. It actually may have a higher calcium content than marine grades but Natural Biology believes it lacks the efficacy of nutrients -thus the benefits.
SIDEBAR: The "above sea" grade companies have launched a rather extensive campaign of mis-information to keep prices very high for the "above sea" grades. This has been referred to in many articles and websites as the "Coral Wars." Notice on many of the search engines a site called Coral Calcium Watchdogs which is nothing but a front for Canadian companies pushing cheaper brands of rock coral into USA Markets. Beware and see our report exposing other companies engaged in corrupting data to their advantages.
Conclusion
We hope this helps put your discovery into perspective. Okinawa Ocean Bed Coral Calcium is a great source of calcium with many other benefits. In the end, there is no such thing as a bad mineral. Natural Biology believes however the benefits of marine grades provide exponentially more benefits.
Our experience has demonstrated people who take Ocean Bed for 1-6 months begin to notice significant improvements in their overall well-being.
