What is Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a polyphenol and a protective compound found and produced in the skin of red grapes, certain berries, and other plants in response to environmental stresses. Studies have demonstrated that resveratrol has potent antioxidant activity and also has the ability to inhibit platelet aggregation. These actions may help prevent free radical damage throughout the body and provide protective support to the cardiovascular system. Resveratrol, especially when combined with other polyphenols, is known for its youthful sustaining properties. Red wine has about 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol per liter (a liter is almost 34 ounces).

Resveratrol has been in the news a great deal. Recent headlines have been talking about the health benefits of red wine, most notably that it lowers your risk of cancer and heart disease. Research studies continue to find more interesting benefits from this red wine compound, including potential anti-cancer and anti-aging activity. Scientists discovered the link between red wine consumption and better health while studying what they call the French paradox: Why do the French have less heart disease and cancer, when the typical French diet and lifestyle often includes high-fat foods as well as cigarettes? Their studies showed that, surprisingly, it was the French habit of drinking a glass or two of red wine each day that protected them from developing these chronic diseases.

Yet how can drinking alcohol actually improve anyone’s health when it is a well-established fact that alcohol inhibits the body’s absorption of all vitamins, and can, when consumed regularly, lead to liver damage, dementia, and a host of other nasty disorders? Researchers found the answer to this question when they discovered resveratrol, an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory substance found in red wine. Further studies of resveratrol revealed that it helps prevent blood clots by keeping blood vessels open and pliable.

Resveratrol helps lower cholesterol, and is as much as 10 to 20 times more potent than vitamin E in protecting against LDL oxidation, a process that has been linked to the development of cardiovascular disease. It is also thought to discourage tumor growth by blocking the action of Cox-2, an enzyme that researchers believe contributes to the development of colon cancer. Additional studies suggest that resveratrol may be useful in both preventing and treating cancer.

Resveratrol is found in the stems, leaves, and skins of grapes. As red wine is a rich source of resveratrol, many sources will reference resveratrol as "red wine polyphenols, "red wine extract" etc. - of course we now know French red wine grape extracts have a higher resveratrol content of the active ingredient trans-resveratrol. Although a glass or two of red wine each day may lower the risk of heart disease, one recent study shows that alcohol-free red wine works just as well. Resveratrol is also present in purple grape juice, red or purple grapes, and peanuts. However, because of the fermenting process, resveratrol levels are higher in red wine than other natural sources—red wine has about three times as much resveratrol as grape juice.

Sources of Resveratrol

Resveratrol is found in grapevines—in the vines, roots, seeds and stalks—with its highest concentration being in the grape skin. Resveratrol is also found in raspberries, mulberries, peanuts and other plants. Polygonum cuspidatum, commonly called Japanese Knot Root (ironically 99% of the world's supply comes from China) has become a popular source in the world because it is readily available but it has to undergo extensive processing to extract any active ingredients. Harvard Study

The heart of longevity research today, resveratrol is a naturally occurring compound in plants called a phytoalexin, which means that it attacks pathogens that damage the plant, effectively acting as the plant's immune system.

Dr. David Sinclair, a researcher at the Harvard Medical School, is on the forefront of resveratrol research into longevity. Passionate about the science and study of aging, as a young man in 1999 he was recruited by Harvard Medical School due to his findings about sirtuins, a type of protein which assists in the repair of DNA. In his studies of yeast and later of small mammals, he found that when the DNA structure deteriorates, the resulting genomic instability causes the body to age.

Dr. Sinclair has since focused his energies on the health-giving properties of resveratrol. There are many: it has been shown to prevent skin cancer in mice, it significantly improves glucose stability in the blood (essential for diabetics), it creates faster metabolism (causing less weight gain), and it significantly reduced plaque formation in the brain (a leading cause of Alzheimer's disease). His research, however, has led full circle, back to the aging process and how resveratrol may slow it. It is a powerful antioxidant, assisting in the capture of free radicals throughout the body.

SIRT-1 Gene - The Key to Longevity

Up to now only calorie restriction had proven to stimulate the SSIRT-1 gene which is the only proven research to extend life – thus longevity but now resveratrol has been proven to do the same!

In addition to all these benefits, Dr. Sinclair believes that resveratrol activates the human sirtuin gene SIRT-1, which has already been proven to slow the effects of aging in humans through regulation and repair of DNA. SIRT-1, also known as the "survival gene" among geneticists, is generally only activated through radiation, infection or starvation, and prolongs the time a cell has to repair its DNA. This is designed as a biological survival mechanism. It has long been known that people who are consistently hungry tend to live longer than people who aren't, but this provides some scientific evidence as to why that is the case.

His studies at Harvard so far have yielded impressive results, and the whole medical world is talking about it. The recent article in Nature magazine catapulted the research into the public world, and have made everyone excited about the possibility of significantly increased lifespan. Perhaps the most popularized notion has been the discovery of significant quantities of resveratrol in red wine.

Notably found in highest concentrations of in the French wine country, the fact that red wine could be the key to longevity has stunned researchers and laypeople alike. RESVERATROL SUPPLEMENTS: ACTIVE COMPONENTS

There are three constituents of grape polyphenols that are possibly responsible for the French paradox:

1. Trans-resveratrol- a phytoalexin, an antibiotic compound produced by the grapes in response to external invasion, infection and disease. In grapes, resveratrol is found only in the skins and its amount varies with the grape cultivar, geographic origin, and climate. Red wine contains more resveratrol than white and rose wines as red wines spend more time in contact with grape skins during processing.

Resveratrol content in wines varies from 0.05 - 1.8 mg/l in white wines to 1.98 - 7.13 mg/l in red wines.
Red wine resveratrol has made the headlines after studies indicated that it might promote longevity in
mice on a high-calorie diet as well as reduce obesity-related issues such as diabetes and heart disease .
Resveratrol was first found to help promote healthy longevity in yeast and short-term vertebrates. In mice, the death rate of middle-aged animals on a high-calorie diet plus resveratrol was decreased by 31%5. As a potent antioxidant, resveratrol was also shown to inhibit low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and platelet aggregation.
In an animal model, resveratrol provided cardioprotection by reducing ischemia-reperfusion-induced arrhythmias and mortality. In endothelial cell cultures it increased nitric oxide synthase, the enzyme responsible for biosynthesis of Nitric Oxide synthesis. It also induced phase 2 metabolizing enzymes involved in the detoxification of carcinogens and inhibited in vitro cancer cell proliferation.

2. Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)- also known as proanthocyanidins and procyanidins. OPCs are found in the seeds of grapes. OPCs are dimer-, trimer-, and tetramer-condensation products of the polyphenolic monomers (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin. OPCs are one of nature’s most powerful and readily bioavailable antioxidants. Plasma levels of total catechin and its metabolites in human volunteers increased about five times one hour after consumption of 120 ml of red wine or de-alcoholized red wine16. Serum full grape extract levels measured in human volunteers after 4 weeks of Vintage Resveratrol 100% ingestion significantly increased. Serum levels later dropped by 18% after supplementation was discontinued for 2 weeks, suggesting that grape phenols are quickly depleted when not supplemented.

Procyanidin dimers are considered the most beneficial to health and are the most prevalent in red wine4. In their free radical scavenging capacity, grape procyanidin dimers were about 20 times stronger than Vitamin C . Procyanidin dimers are the correct size to be potent antioxidants and yet be immediately bioavailable. In addition, procyanidin dimers are the correct size for enzyme binding, which may account for the cardioprotective effects of red wine consumption. These enzymes are also critical in detoxifying carcinogens and repairing damaged DNA. Procyanidin dimers prevent oxidation of these enzymes and the decrease of their activity, leading to metabolic disorders and risk of chronic diseases.

3. Anthocyanins- from the grape skins. Anthocyanins have demonstrated in animal studies to be beneficial for cardioprotection, cholesterol lowering, vision improvement, and general free-radical scavenging .

The Bible has always been extolling the virtues of grapes. After taking around 15 capsules, I noticed my skin looks younger and firmer despite taking only one capsule a day instead of the recommended dosage. I like its purple colour and taste which differentiates it from other types of reservatrol. Very few food come in purple colour and this colour is believed to effect healing. Ranked top 3 of all supplements I ever tried.

Your information is very good about resveatrol because I discovered the same results that only French Red Grape Wine Extact with 5% trans-resveratrol acts effective as a naturally occurring resveratrol; whereas, so many get it wrong. Vintage Resveratrol 100% is a well-formulated product and I use it daily.

I have used multiple resveratrol products that have either just not worked at all or made me sick. Since using Vintage Resveratrol I feel the difference. My energy level is up. I get sick less often and I feel my overall health has improved. It is a great product I would highly recommend to anyone. Oh, by the way, I believe it has really helped my skin and a lot of people have commented how much younger I look.
